If you are considering therapy:
The decision to seek counseling or psychotherapy can be a difficult one for many people and choosing a psychologist can be a daunting task. The client and therapist partnership must “click together” or really work in order for it to succeed. There must be a connection, an atmosphere of respect, support, trust, and caring. The search for understanding can bring insight, healing, growth, positive transformation, increased creativity, and a greater potential for happiness.
Psychotherapy is a process of discovery and a learning process. It is a partnership between an individual (or couple or family) and a professional who is licensed and trained to help people understand their feelings and assist them with developing healthier, more effective patterns of behavior.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one-third of adults in the United States experience an emotional or substance abuse problem. Nearly 25% of the adult population suffers at some point from depression or anxiety. Many do not even recognize that they have a condition that can be treated very effectively.
Consider therapy if:
- You feel an overwhelming and prolonged sense of helplessness and sadness, and your problems do not seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends.
- You are finding it difficult to carry out everyday activities. For example, you are unable to concentrate on schoolwork, or assignments at work.
- You find yourself continuously worrying or are constantly “on edge”.
- Your behaviors are harmful to yourself or to others. For example, you may be drinking alcohol excessively, or becoming argumentative or overly moody.
